Manchester United

Steve Cooper has opened up on the honest conversations he had with Manchester United graduate James Garner about his progression with Nottingham Forest.

A product of the famed Old Trafford academy, Garner returned to the City Ground on loan this summer.

The 20-year-old made 40 appearances in the Championship last season - with Forest and Watford - and the highly-rated holding midfielder has returned to form in the East Midlands.

Having found himself out of Cooper's team earlier in the season, Garner has started the previous three matches and made a big impact during the win over struggling Peterborough.

The United prospect scored his first goal of the season and, also, provided an assist in that 2-0 victory as he found himself deployed in a more advanced role.

But what next for the two-cap England U21 international?

Speaking about the United graduate, Forest manager Steve Cooper said: "At this moment in time he's doing really, really well. He's been a little bit in and out of the team and we've had some good, honest conversations.

"I have a good relationship with Jim and his family anyway, because of our time together with England. These loans can be really important for young players from Premier League clubs. We hope this one is. They can be up and down - I wouldn't say he had a down, but he was fighting to get in the team.

Which academy player will break through next? Have your say in the comments section below.

"For me, in the last three games he's been excellent.

"He came on against Reading and was really, really good. He started against Luton Town and West Brom and his performances were of a high level.

"Second half on Saturday, particularly, he carried on, so he's in a good moment. But he's got to stay really focused and aim to play even better next week."
